Meet Henry
At Hallmark House Memory Care, every resident brings a lifetime of experiences, accomplishments, and cherished memories that deserve to be celebrated. Our Resident Spotlight series honors the remarkable people who call our community home while highlighting the compassionate, person-centered approach to memory care that families throughout Louisville, KY have come to trust.
Today, we’re honored to introduce Henry Colantoni—a devoted husband, proud father, respected businessman, Army veteran, and lifelong servant to his community whose kindness continues to inspire everyone around him.

Serving His Country and His Community
He worked at a meat processing establishment, before he enlisted in the United States Army. After serving two years, stationed in Korea, he returned home and began working in a local grocery and fresh meat butcher shop, Taft Avenue Market. He soon became a partner in the business and helped grow it to a new, larger location and became sole owner. After forty-two years as a neighborhood icon, community voice and businessman, Henry sold the business and retired.

Family Has Always Come First
Henry and Rose were married for 64 years, had three children, and three grandchildren. They had touched countless lives with their compassion and kindness. After retiring, they moved to an adult community neighborhood. As he did throughout his life, Henry focused on visiting neighbors who needed assistance. He would bring food, games and puzzles, read news articles to them, or simply share stories. For those who had doctor’s appointments, he would provide transportation, wait for them, and return them home, making certain they had anything they might need. He would be there to provide fellowship and companionship to many and take time to mail cards to others.

Henry Colantoni, 91, lived in Pittsburgh, PA until 2021 when he and his wife, Rose, moved to Kentucky to be closer to their daughter.
As a young boy, he worked in his father’s small shoe repair shop and learned the values of commitment, honesty and integrity, and the impact that small businesses have on individuals and the community. When Henry’s father passed unexpectedly, he had to leave college to assume head-of-household responsibilities among his sister, stepmother and two stepsisters.

A Legacy of Kindness
During his lifetime, Henry has selflessly placed family, friends, and community interests over his own needs and aspirations. He has been a mentor to children coming to his store, taking any opportunity to provide inspiration and motivation for them to focus on their education, and to be honest and kind. Within his business, Henry would deliver groceries to elderly or disabled persons living in community housing neighborhoods.

He still continues the role of watching out for the welfare of others, giving directions when his daughter is driving, pointing out unsafe objects, and having pleasant interactions with the young visitors. At work, he was known as “Mr. Taft”. To his cousins, he is “King”, and to some friends, he is Hank, but his favorite name has always been, “Daddy”.
