The Life and Legacy of Linda (Rucker) Riley
Born July 27, 1941 | Anderson County, Kentucky
Linda (Rucker) Riley was born on July 27, 1941, in Anderson County, Kentucky, near Lawrenceburg. She was the second of four children born to James and Lilly Rucker. Growing up alongside her sister Joyce and brothers Edgar and Lloyd, Linda learned early the values of hard work, faith, and family.
Growing Up on a Kentucky Farm
Linda was raised on a small farm in rural Kentucky. The family lived in an old farmhouse with no indoor plumbing and limited electricity. Life wasn’t easy — they grew tobacco, tended crops, and cared for livestock but Linda always described her childhood as joyful.
She often spoke about the blessing of a large, close-knit extended family. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins were a steady presence in her life. Church and family gatherings shaped her character and strong sense of community.
One of her favorite childhood stories was about her first day of school. Although her sister Joyce was older, their mother sent Linda on the school bus alongside her. It quickly became clear that Linda had a natural gift for learning, something her family remembered with pride.
High School Sweetheart and College Years
Linda graduated from Anderson County High School in 1958. During her high school years, she met the love of her life, Don Riley.
After graduation, Don joined the United States Navy. Linda continued her education at Eastern Kentucky University. Though separated by distance during his service, their commitment to one another never wavered.
They were married on September 30, 1961. Linda moved to Norfolk, Virginia, where Don was stationed. Years later, it felt like a full-circle moment when their grandson Dustin also served in the Navy and was stationed in Norfolk.
Building a Family in Lexington and Louisville, Kentucky
After Don’s military service, the couple returned to Kentucky and settled in Lexington. There, they welcomed their first two sons, Duane and Brent.
In 1968, the Riley family moved to Louisville, Kentucky, where their third son, Sean, was born in September 1969.
Life in Louisville was busy and full of energy. Don raced cars at Fairgrounds Motor Speedway, and Linda faithfully brought their boys to every race.
She was deeply involved in her children’s education, serving as PTA president and room mother throughout their school years. During this time, Linda began her long and successful career in Louisville real estate.
A Career in Louisville Real Estate
Linda built a respected career in the Louisville real estate market. She balanced professionalism with warmth, earning trust in both business and community circles.
Even while building her career, family always came first. The Riley home was filled with boating trips, camping adventures, paper routes, and a shared love of cars. Like their father, all three sons developed careers in the automotive industry.
Linda and Don also enjoyed playing competitive tennis and spending time with friends.
Grandchildren, Holidays, and Family Traditions
Linda and Don were blessed with six grandchildren: three grandsons and three granddaughters. She especially treasured welcoming baby girls into the family.
Holidays were the highlight of Linda’s year. Her home became the heart of family gatherings, filled with laughter, storytelling, and home-cooked meals. She loved hosting sleepovers, attending school events, and cheering on her grandchildren in all their activities.
Strength Through Loss and New Adventures
In July 2001, just days after celebrating her 60th birthday, Linda experienced the heartbreaking loss of her middle son, Brent, in a motor vehicle accident. The tragedy deeply changed both Linda and Don and reshaped their outlook on life.
After Don semi-retired, the couple purchased a small RV and began traveling across the United States. With their beloved dog, Joy, they explored the western mountains, visited friends and family, and discovered America’s beautiful national parks.
Don passed away in April 2011.
Later Years in Louisville
After Don’s passing, Linda moved from the family home to a patio home in the Fern Creek area of Louisville, where she lived for many years. In early 2025, she moved to Hallmark House, where she continues to be surrounded by care and community.
